"Calmly Alert"Charlie asked for me to paint an animal mural with a positive message during these troubling times. The hippopotamus symbology is of the power in remaining calm and courageous in the midst of adversity. While the charging hippo is anything but calm, the resting state of a hippo is one of complete alertness. They calmly observe their environment and know what to do when action is needed. Movement comes from within, not from the outside world. They are known for fearlessly intermingling with other animals (even potential predators) because they are so self-assured in their own strength. I thought the messaging of intentional introspection while simultaneously staying informed of the actions of the world around them so they are prepared to act with powerful intention was a very apt symbol as an artist during the pandemic.
