ON PROCESS:
Making art is a physical act. There is an idea, some planning, a goal - this happens beforehand - but the process of building, constructing, working is the important part, the real thing. My theory is that the work occupies my body and part of my brain, allowing ideas from my subconscious to make it onto the board. This is true at any size, but at a large scale, it is especially so. The intense physical nature of making a piece this big resulted in work that unfolded in front me, at times without my notice. As in all my recent work, this piece includes paper collage and acrylic paint. The difficulty in applying my usual techniques at such a size was at first frustrating, then liberating. I feel good about the results in a different way than usual, observing the finished work with some surprise, unable to recall exactly how it got there.
